We officially started our experiments this week! As usually happens with this type of work, you can run in to lots of unforeseen problems. We had several, including a tank exploding, problems with the artificial seagrass, and trouble finding one of our predators in the field. But, we've finally started running them and they are going well. So instead of adventures around Perth we've been in the lab. So we took pictures of our life here at the School of Natural Sciences at Edith Cowan Uni.

This is a take-out place near our apt. By the third time we went there they remembered us by name! We're going again for lunch today because Ken's only here for a bit longer and he wants to have it, and we haven't had it in almost a week! :)

Pictures from the weekend
This weekend we went into Perth on Saturday to go to the big park they have in the middle of the city called King's Park. The Swan River runs right through the city and the park is on a hill next to the river, so we had great views of Perth from up there. The park also has a botanical garden, so we walked through and saw all these native Australian flowers and trees. So a lot of the pictures in this slideshow are from the park. Later that day we went to a professor's house to have a dinner. She cooked some great food and there was a lot of good wine and shop-talk. She lives close enough to the coast to have an ocean view. Sunday we went to AQWA- the aquarium of Western Australia. They have it set up so you walk around to different sections of the WA coast. It was good. They also had a huge tanks with a tunnel you walk under. Pretty big sharks and eagle rays! Plus, in a section of the place called "Danger Zone" we diagnosed the weird red dots on one of Ken's leg. We think he got stung by a Cockburn Sound anenome, we've been collecting fish at Cockburn Sound! But, their sting is not life-threatening like most other things here, so he's okay.
AQWA is next to this big Harbour called Hillarys. It has a bunch of shops, and also some random water slides and carnival rides. There's also a little protected area of beach, and it was overrun by families with little Australian children who have really cute accents. There is live music on Sundays there, so we went and listened. The band was good, although they played a really random mix of cover songs and also some we'd never heard!
We had a really good time also last week while Meg (one of Ken's old masters students) visited us. She's been living in Australia for about 3 years so she was able to clue us in to some of their weird phrases and habits. "Arvo" means afternoon, "knackered" means really tired, "yonks" means a long way, like traveled yonks, and all words that can be shortened are.

Sorry it's taken so long!
It seems like there are never enough hours in the day! We have been really busy here, between field days collecting animals for our experiments, working in the lab getting things set up to do the experiments, and also some sight-seeing! The computers here also have a lot of protection so getting the pictures up has taken a while.
But- there is a slideshow up, and I hope it works. The pictures are of us collecting our fish and shrimp from areas near Perth like Point Peron, Mangles Bay, and the northshore. Most of the snorkling pictures are from out trip to Rottnest Island. It is a short ferry ride from Fremantle, and we spent one night. A couple professors went with us and were our tourguides. As you can see in the pictures, it's all gorgeous! It's one of the only places where it's cool enough for kelp and warm enough for coral. We saw about 10 different species of seagrass! The small animal that looks like a rat is called a quokka- it's a marsupial and it only lives on Rotto. It is cute except for its rat tail. And it hops which is funny. We've also had a few bbqs- so there's a picture of "shrimp on the barbie!"
